Aerial Requirements
- Performer(s) will rig all equipment.
- Exposed rafters or large structural beams that can bear loads of 800 to 1250 lbs. at minimum.
- A ladder/scaffold is needed that reaches the rigging point. If this is unavailable, there must be access to the rigging point from above.
- At least 6′ free space below and around the apparatus.
- A site inspection and a short tech rehearsal to test rigging.
- Access to venue 2 hours prior to event start to rig and prepare for performance.
- Guest entry for an assistant who will provide safety/security for the performer and/or document the performance.
Available equipment includes but not limited to:
- Lyra – A steel hoop that can be suspended from a single point or two.
- Aerial Frame – A suspended rectangle (like a window frame).
- Sling/Cloud Sling/Aerial Net – A sling is fabric, hung as a loop (with the ends at the top) from a single point. Cloud sling is rigged from two points, ideally 9′ apart. Aerial net is similar to sling and cloud sling, but it looks like a gigantic hammock.
- Still Rings – Still rings are like the men’s gymnastics rings, but this performance integrates trapeze and silk/sling moves.
- Custom/improvised apparatus – Custom and improvised aerial apparatus I use include Star of David, aerial chains and roundsling.
Fire Requirements
- Engagements require two important and distinct areas: the Performance Area and the Fuel Station. The fuel station should be clearly marked with NO SMOKING signs. Fire tools will be lit within the performance area (or stage). All fuel containers will be located in the fuel station.
- A fire resistant ground surface (carpet or linoleum are not acceptable; if grass, ensure it is well watered)
- The fuel used for most fire performances is Coleman Camping Fuel (also known as “white gas” or “naptha”).
- All fire engagements require an additional Fire Safety (provided by the performer) to monitor the performance and be prepared to act in case of an emergency.
- The Fire Safety will be equipped with a fire extinguisher and a fire blanket to extinguish tools, performer and clothing in case of emergency.
- Generally, there needs to be a space of 9-10 feet between the performer and the audience and a minimum ceiling height of 12′.
- Note: Many indoor fire protection systems are smoke or particle based, and they may be triggered by fumes and light smoke. This must be taken into consideration prior to any performance.
- Special Considerations: Wind is a fire performer’s worst enemy. Generally, fire goes upward and the performer stays to the side of or below a flame. With wind, fire can blow back into the performer’s face, causing potential serious or fatal injuries. If the wind direction is inconsistent or over 5mph, I reserve a right to refuse fire performances, in particular fire eating.
