May 19-21st is jam-packed! Two photo shoots, go-go dancing, a cult movie and then Gold Room. Wow. Here’s the scoop:

• Thursday, May 19th, Blast-Off Burlesque – ALL of Blast-Off Burlesque – will be workin’ it for Atlanta’s Burlesque Camera Club. It’s at Studio APG, part of the Goat Farm at 1200 Foster Street, Atlanta 303018. $50 to shoot, “$5 for gawkers”… email Marc for more information.
• Friday, May 20th, I’m doing a shoot with Chris Scredon. It’s part of his project documenting performers, and I’ll be rigging up from a tree in Cabbagetown Park. Fun.
• Saturday, May 21st is a triathlon of varied performance: dancing with Burt & The Bandits at East Atlanta Beerfest, then partying and performing as part of Blast-Off Burlesque‘s Taboo-La-La screening of Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill! at the Plaza, and finally, doing my thing at Gold Room‘s Magnum Mustache party.

Blast-Off Burlesque will host pre-show and lobby entertainment, including special guest Grinder Nova and a silent auction of Tura Satana-related art and memorabilia. Be a part of the Varla costume contest, the beefcake muscle show or the all-girl arm wrestling championship! Prizes from Taboo-La-La’s sponsor, Libertine, include great treats from Tokyo Milk!

All proceeds of the silent auction and any donations to the Tura shrine will go to Varla Films, helping to complete the documentary about her life and to continue her legacy. The silent auction will feature classic 8×10 photos from Tura’s personal collection and art from Mitch O’Connell, Big Toe, Bethany Marchman, Zteven, Dave Cook and others.

A sexy, campy classic from the early 1990s, Showgirls is experiencing a revival as a cult, over the top romp into the sordid world of Las Vegas’ legendary stage productions. The movie will be part of the Plaza’s annual members’ party, and it will pre-empted by a brief stage show inviting audience participation.

• Partner up and compete in a re-enactment of the infamous “pool scene” – the best one gets a special prize!
• Be the best-dressed as a Showgirls character, and win prizes!

General admission for the Showgirls event is $15, and Plaza Theatre members are invited to attend this members’ appreciation party for free. The show begins Saturday, March 19th at 9:00PM; the members party kicks off at 8:00PM.

Blast-Off Burlesque has been participating in Plaza Theatre events for over four years, notably with the Silver Scream Spook Show. With the premiere of the Taboo-La-La series, the group has parted way with the Spook Show to focus on saucier cinema. We’re planning Taboo-La-La to occur every other month at the Plaza.

The Silver Scream Spook Show is BACK for Halloween! Well, on Saturday the 23rd at 1 & 10PM… AND…remember to sport your most SPOOKTACULAR costume for our annual Halloween costume contest!

Kids under 12 are free at the 1PM matinee show; everyone else is $7. All 10PM night show tickets are $10.

The Silver Scream Spook Show is a 30 minute live stage show filled with magic tricks, dancing girls, jokes, spectacle and frights! We follow it with a classic horror movie on actual 35mm film!

Here’s the scoop on this month’s movie, Tales of Terror:

Roger Corman’s Tales of Terror stars Vincent Price in a trio of short stories, liberally adapted by Richard Matheson from the works of Edgar Allan Poe. The film gets off to a rousing start with “Morella,” in which Price’s bitterness over the long-ago death of his wife results in tragedy for his estranged daughter Maggie Pierce. The last of the three terror-filled tales, “The Case of Mr. Valdemar,” finds Price being put into a state of suspended animation by the diabolical Basil Rathbone; when Rathbone claims Price’s bride Debra Paget for himself, Price briefly revives, only to melt before our eyes (this horrific image was reproduced on the film’s advertising posters). The film’s best story is its centerpiece, “The Black Cat,” which weaves elements of “The Cask of Amontillado” into a mordantly funny revenge tale concerning Price, his bitter enemy Peter Lorre, and Lorre’s two-timing wife Joyce Jameson. This is the one in which a besotted Lorre walls up Price and Jameson in his cellar, then endures a hellish hallucination of Vincent and Joyce playing a football game with his head! A mixed bag, to be sure, but Tales of Terror remains one of the best of Corman’s Poe cycle.
